What occurs if nodes have totally different P2P variations throughout discovery?

My understanding is that nodes connecting to one another to alternate messages begins with a model handshake such that every node sends its P2P protocol model and will get an acknowledgement and vice versa. If the nodes are operating totally different variations then communication can’t proceed.

So in response to this developer reference would it not be appropriate to conclude {that a} node operating Bitcoin Core v0.13.2 and one other operating on launch v0.13.0 wouldn’t talk?

Additionally, if a big variety of nodes run totally different protocol variations, is this case what would end in a tough fork?
